1Listen and Answer

Listen to the whole text first. Try to answer the questions before reading the text.

1. 今天是什么日子?

Jīntiān shì shénme rìzi?

What day is it today?

今天开学。

Jīntiān kāixué.

School starts today.

2. 小明看见同学在做什么?

Xiǎomíng kànjiàn tóngxué zài zuò shénme?

What does Xiaoming see the classmates doing?

小明看见同学在教室里面写字。

Xiǎomíng kànjiàn tóngxué zài jiàoshì lǐmiàn xiě zì.

Xiaoming sees classmates writing inside the classroom.

3. 老师让大家做什么?

Lǎoshī ràng dàjiā zuò shénme?

What does the teacher ask everyone to do?

老师让大家介绍自己的姓名和爱好。

Lǎoshī ràng dàjiā jièshào zìjǐ de xìngmíng hé àihào.

The teacher asks everyone to introduce their names and hobbies.

4. 女孩儿长什么样?

Nǚháir zhǎng shénme yàng?

What does the girl look like?

她个子不高,眼睛很大。

Tā gèzi bù gāo, yǎnjing hěn dà.

She is not tall, and her eyes are big.

5. 下课后,我们一起做什么?

Xiàkè hòu, wǒmen yìqǐ zuò shénme?

After class, what do we do together?

我们一起看本子里的词,也一起等公交车。

Wǒmen yìqǐ kàn běnzi lǐ de cí, yě yìqǐ děng gōngjiāochē.

We look at the words in the notebook together, and we also wait for the bus together.

今天开学。我走进新的班,看见两名同学在教室里面写字。老师进来后,介绍自己的姓名,也让我们介绍爱好。我有点儿不好意思,但还是说了:“我喜欢读书和听歌。” 老师笑着说:“真不错。”

下课后,一个女孩儿跟我说话。她姓李,个子不高,眼睛很大。我们一起看本子里的词,也一起等公交车。我觉得这个新班很好。

我走进新的班,看见两名同学在教室里面写字。

Wǒ zǒu jìn xīn de bān, kànjiàn liǎng míng tóngxué zài jiàoshì lǐmiàn xiě zì.

我 (I) 走进 (walk into) 新的 (new) 班 (class),看见 (see) 两名 (two) 同学 (classmates) 在 (at / in) 教室 (classroom) 里面 (inside) 写字 (write characters)。

I walk into the new class and see two classmates writing inside the classroom.

老师进来后,介绍自己的姓名,也让我们介绍爱好。

Lǎoshī jìnlái hòu, jièshào zìjǐ de xìngmíng, yě ràng wǒmen jièshào àihào.

老师 (teacher) 进来后 (after coming in),介绍 (introduce) 自己的 (one's own) 姓名 (full name),也 (also) 让 (let / ask) 我们 (us) 介绍 (introduce) 爱好 (hobbies)。

After the teacher comes in, she introduces her own name and also asks us to introduce our hobbies.

Note: Pivotal sentence “让我们介绍爱好”: 让/叫 + person + action, lets or asks a person to do the next action.

我有点儿不好意思,但还是说了:“我喜欢读书和听歌。”

Wǒ yǒudiǎnr bù hǎoyìsi, dàn háishì shuō le: “Wǒ xǐhuan dúshū hé tīng gē.”

我 (I) 有点儿 (a little) 不好意思 (embarrassed / shy),但 (but) 还是 (still) 说了 (said):“我 (I) 喜欢 (like) 读书 (reading) 和 (and) 听歌 (listening to songs)。”

I feel a little shy, but I still say, “I like reading and listening to songs.”

老师笑着说:“真不错。”

Lǎoshī xiào zhe shuō: “Zhēn búcuò.”

老师 (teacher) 笑着 (smiling / while smiling) 说 (say):“真 (really) 不错 (not bad / pretty good)。”

The teacher smiles and says, “Really good.”

Note: "着" structure “老师笑着说”: verb + 着 + verb, shows the manner or accompanying state of the action.

下课后,一个女孩儿跟我说话。

Xiàkè hòu, yí ge nǚháir gēn wǒ shuōhuà.

下课后 (after class),一个 (one) 女孩儿 (girl) 跟 (with) 我 (me) 说话 (talk)。

After class, a girl talks to me.

她姓李,个子不高,眼睛很大。

Tā xìng Lǐ, gèzi bù gāo, yǎnjing hěn dà.

她 (she) 姓 (be surnamed) 李 (Li),个子 (height) 不高 (not tall),眼睛 (eyes) 很大 (very big)。

Her surname is Li. She is not tall, and her eyes are big.

我们一起看本子里的词,也一起等公交车。

Wǒmen yìqǐ kàn běnzi lǐ de cí, yě yìqǐ děng gōngjiāochē.

我们 (we) 一起 (together) 看 (look at) 本子 (notebook) 里 (inside) 的 (particle) 词 (words),也 (also) 一起 (together) 等 (wait for) 公交车 (bus)。

We look at the words in the notebook together, and we also wait for the bus together.

我觉得这个新班很好。

Wǒ juéde zhè ge xīn bān hěn hǎo.

我 (I) 觉得 (think / feel) 这个 (this) 新 (new) 班 (class) 很好 (very good)。

I think this new class is very good.
