Grammar Unit 1: Grammar Overview (The Blueprint)
Welcome to the Grammar Section. This lesson gives you the big picture of how Chinese grammar works: fewer word changes, clear word order, useful function words, and simple question patterns.
Lesson Goal
By the end of this lesson, you should understand why Chinese grammar is often more logical than learners expect and how to build basic sentences like Lego bricks.
- Understand that Chinese does not use verb conjugation, noun gender, or plural inflection in the same way as many European languages.
- Use the basic Subject + Verb + Object order.
- Place time, place, and descriptions in a natural Chinese order.
- Recognize the role of function words such as 的, 了, and 吗.
- Form simple yes/no and wh- questions without moving the word order.
Learn
1. The "Good News": Grammar Subtraction
2. No Case Inflection: Chinese nouns and pronouns do not change form based on their role (Subject/Object).
Chinese relies on Word Order and Function Words to express meaning.
a) In Chinese, the position of a word in a sentence directly determines its grammatical role and the basic meaning of the sentence.
b) Function words have no concrete lexical meaning themselves, but they have powerful grammatical functions, acting like ‘switches’ to precisely express tense, mood, relationships, etc. See Section 3.
2. The Golden Structure (S.V.O.)
Rule 1: Natural Order. Chinese speakers describe events in the order they occur or the way we experience them spatially.
🚀 The "Long Sentence" Challenge
Even complex sentences follow the exact same rules! Just stack the blocks.
Rule 2: Description Before Noun. All modifiers come before the word they describe.
3. The Lego Bricks (Components)
- Content Words: Words with real meaning (Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives). e.g., Apple, Run, Big.
- Function Words: Words that have no meaning on their own but connect the bricks. Three key examples:
4. Minimalist Questions & Answers
Statement = Question. No moving words around!
Type A: Yes/No (Add "Ma")
Type B: Wh- Questions (Swap the word)

Unit Summary
- Grammar is Easy: No conjugations, no genders, no plurals.
- The Golden Rule: S + V + O (like English).
- Natural Order: Time and Place set the background before the action.
- Lego Logic: We use “Measure Words” and “Particles” to connect words. Changing the order changes the meaning.
- Topic First: We often put the “Topic” (Object) at the front (This book, I read it).
- Questions: Don’t move words! Just add “ma” or swap the word for “what/where”.
Next Step: In the following units, we will learn these "Lego bricks" (Words) one by one!
