Use this to: Use this to talk about something that happened just now.

1. Grammar Introduction

刚才 (gāngcái), 刚 (gāng), and 刚刚 (gānggāng) can all describe something that happened a very short time ago, but their grammar and tone are slightly different.

  • 刚才 (gāngcái) is a time word / time noun. It can appear before the subject or before the verb. 刚才他打电话给我。(Gāngcái tā dǎ diànhuà gěi wǒ.) — Just now he called me.
  • 刚 (gāng) and 刚刚 (gānggāng) are both adverbs. They normally appear directly before the verb. 他刚回来。(Tā gāng huílái.) — He just came back. 电影刚刚开始。(Diànyǐng gānggāng kāishǐ.) — The film has just started.

Speaking tip: 刚 is shorter and more commonly used in everyday speech. 刚刚 has almost the same meaning but gives slightly more emphasis to how recently the action happened.

刚才 — time noun (can move in the sentence)
刚才 behaves like 昨天, 上午 — it sets the time frame

As a time noun, 刚才 can appear before the subject or before the verb. It cannot appear after the verb.
