HSK3 Grammar: Emphasising Earliness or Lateness — 就 vs 才 (jiù vs cái)

Use this to: Use this to show that something happened earlier or later than expected.

1. Grammar Introduction

就 (jiù) and 才 (cái) both connect a time/condition with an action, but they express opposite subjective judgements — the speaker's feeling about whether something happened early/easily or late/with difficulty.

  • 就 — early, fast, easy, little, smooth: the speaker feels the action happened sooner, faster, or more easily than expected. 我六点就起床了。(Wǒ liù diǎn jiù qǐchuáng le.) — I got up as early as six o'clock.
  • 才 — late, slow, hard, much, reluctant: the speaker feels the action happened later, more slowly, or with more effort than expected. 他八点才起床。(Tā bā diǎn cái qǐchuáng.) — He didn't get up until eight. (that late!)

Same fact, opposite feelings: 我三十分钟就到了 (only 30 min — so fast!) vs 我三十分钟才到 (30 whole minutes — so slow!).

就 — early / fast / easy / little / smooth
就: the speaker is impressed — sooner or easier than expected

就 comes between the time/condition and the verb. It ends with 了 because the result has been achieved. The speaker's tone is: "already / as early as / in just…"

Time / Condition+ 就+ VP + 了
我六点就起床了。Wǒ liù diǎn jiù qǐchuáng le.I got up as early as six. (so early!)
我十分钟就吃完饭了。Wǒ shí fēnzhōng jiù chī wán fàn le.I finished eating in just ten minutes. (so fast!)
他一个月就会说中文了。Tā yī gè yuè jiù huì shuō zhōngwén le.He could speak Chinese in just one month. (so quick!)
这几个苹果就要三十块钱。Zhè jǐ gè píngguǒ jiù yào sānshí kuài qián.These few apples cost as much as 30 yuan! (so much / overpriced)
我一次就通过考试了。Wǒ yī cì jiù tōngguò kǎoshì le.I passed the exam on the very first try. (so easy!)

就 + 了 when the action is already completed. 就 without 了 when the action is still upcoming: 我十分钟后就到。(I'll be there in just ten minutes.)

才 — late / slow / hard / much / reluctant
才: the speaker is unimpressed — later or harder than expected

才 also comes between the time/condition and the verb. It does NOT take 了 at the end — the speaker's tone is: "not until… / it took that long / only after all that effort…"

Time / Condition+ 才+ VP (no 了)
他八点才起床。Tā bā diǎn cái qǐchuáng.He didn't get up until eight. (so late!)
我学了两年才会说中文。Wǒ xué le liǎng nián cái huì shuō zhōngwén.It took me two whole years to learn to speak Chinese. (so long!)
他做了三个小时才做完作业。Tā zuò le sān gè xiǎoshí cái zuò wán zuòyè.It took him three hours to finish his homework. (so much effort!)
我叫了他三次他才来。Wǒ jiào le tā sān cì tā cái lái.I had to call him three times before he came. (so reluctant!)
这几个苹果才十块钱。Zhè jǐ gè píngguǒ cái shí kuài qián.These few apples cost only 10 yuan! (surprisingly cheap)

✗ 他八点才起床了。— 才 does not take 了. The lack of 了 itself signals the speaker's dissatisfaction.

就 vs 才 — the same fact, opposite judgements
The clock doesn't change — only the speaker's feeling does
Feature就 (jiù)才 (cái)
FeelingEarly / fast / easy / little / smoothLate / slow / hard / much / reluctant
Ends with 了?✓ Yes — 就…了✗ No — 才 (no 了)
Tone"as early as / in just / only…""not until / it took… / only after…"
Same time, opposite feelings 我三十分钟后就到。
I'll be there in just 30 min! (fast)
我三十分钟后才到。
It'll take me 30 whole minutes. (slow)
✗ Common error ✗ 他八点就起床(He woke up at 8:00)。(missing 了) ✗ 他八点才起床了。(wrong 了)

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid:

❌ Wrong: Confusing when to add 了 with 就 — 就 + 了 for completed actions; 就 without 了 for upcoming actions

✅ Correct: 他八点就起床了。(completed ✓)  |  我十分钟后就到。(upcoming, no 了 ✓)

❌ Wrong: 他八点才起床了。(才 with 了) — 才 does not take 了 — the absence of 了 is part of the grammar

✅ Correct: 他八点才起床。(Tā bā diǎn cái qǐchuáng.) — no 了

❌ Wrong: Thinking 就 and 才 express different times — they can describe the exact same time — only the speaker's judgement differs

✅ Correct: 三十分钟就到了 (fast!) vs 三十分钟才到 (slow!) — same 30 minutes, opposite feelings
