HSK2 Grammar: More Uses of "的(de)"

Use this to: connect nouns, describe people or things, and avoid repeating obvious nouns.
1. Grammar Introduction

In HSK1, you learned that 的 (de) shows possession: 我的书 (my book). Now in HSK2, we add a second use: 的 can also connect an adjective/noun to a noun as a modifier. Once you know both uses, you'll discover they share an important rule — the noun after the particle can be dropped when context makes it clear.

① POSSESSION — Review from HSK1
Possessor + 的 + Noun

的 connects a possessor (pronoun or noun) to the thing possessed. In a sentence, when this noun has already been mentioned, it can be omitted after the particle.

我的书 (wǒ de shū) — my book
这本书是我的(书)。 Zhè běn shū shì wǒ de (shū). This book is mine. — "书" dropped: already said earlier
那双鞋是他的,不是我的 Nà shuāng xié shì tā de, bú shì wǒ de. Those shoes are his, not mine. — "鞋" omitted both times
② ADJECTIVE / NOUN MODIFIER — New in HSK2
Adjective / Noun + 的 + Noun

的 also connects a modifier — either an adjective or a noun — to the noun it describes. The modifier tells us what kind of thing the noun is (adjective) or what type / origin it belongs to (noun).

Adjective + 的 + Noun: 新的书 (xīn de shū) — a new book  |  漂亮的衣服 (piàoliang de yīfu) — beautiful clothes
Noun + 的 + Noun: 中文的书 (Zhōngwén de shū) — a Chinese book  |  中国的朋友 (Zhōngguó de péngyou) — a Chinese friend
这是一本新的书。 Zhè shì yì běn xīn de shū. This is a new book. — adjective modifier
这是中文的书还是英文的 Zhè shì Zhōngwén de shū háishi Yīngwén de? Is this a Chinese book or an English one? — noun modifier; "书" dropped 2nd time
她穿了一件漂亮的衣服。 Tā chuān le yí jiàn piàoliang de yīfu. She wore a beautiful piece of clothing. — multi-syllable adjective

Note — adjective modifier: Single-syllable adjective + common noun → 的 optional: 好老师 OR 好的老师 ✅
Multi-syllable adjective + noun → 的 required: 漂亮衣服 ✅   ~~漂亮衣服~~ ❌
Note — noun modifier: 中文书 ✅   中文书 ✅ (keep the 的 if you want to emphasize)

③ THE SHARED RULE — Noun Omission (de-phrase)
Both ① and ② allow the noun to be dropped

When the noun after the particle has already appeared in the sentence or is clear from context, it can be omitted. The remaining modifier + the particle acts as a noun by itself — this is called a de-phrase (de-phrase).

Context ① Possession → de-phrase ② Adj / Noun modifier → de-phrase
Full form 这本书是我的书Zhè běn shū shì wǒ de shū. This book is my book. 我要新的书Wǒ yào xīn de shū. I want a new book.
这是中文的书还是英文的书Zhè shì Zhōngwén de shū háishi Yīngwén de shū? Is this a Chinese book or an English book?
Noun dropped 这本书是我Zhè běn shū shì wǒ de. This book is mine. 我要新Wǒ yào xīn de. I want a new one.
这是中文书还是英文Zhè shì Zhōngwén de shū háishi Yīngwén de? Is this a Chinese book or an English one?
Why OK? “书” appeared before 的. “书” is understood from context; the repeated noun can be omitted.

⚠️ If the noun has not appeared and is not obvious, you cannot drop it.

Usage Scenarios:

  • ① Possession — identifying ownership 这本书是我的。(Zhè běn shū shì wǒ de.) — This book is mine. ["书" dropped after the particle]
  • ① Possession — asking "whose?" 这是谁的?(Zhè shì shéi de?) — Whose is this? [noun fully omitted, object visible]
  • ② Adjective → de-phrase — describing an identified noun 这本书是新的。(Zhè běn shū shì xīn de.) — This book is new.
  • ② Noun modifier — specifying type or origin 这是中文的书还是英文的?(Zhè shì Zhōngwén de shū háishi Yīngwén de?) — Is this a Chinese book or an English one? ["书" dropped 2nd time]
  • ② Adj/Noun → de-phrase — choosing between two things 我要大的,不要小的。(Wǒ yào dà de, bú yào xiǎo de.) — I want the big one, not the small one.
  • ② Adjective → de-phrase — contrasting qualities 贵的不一定好,便宜的不一定差。(Guì de bù yīdìng hǎo, piányí de bù yīdìng chà.) — Expensive ones aren't necessarily good; cheap ones aren't necessarily bad.
  • ① + ② — both in one sentence 这件是新的,那件是她的。(Zhè jiàn shì xīn de, nà jiàn shì tā de.) — This one is a new one; that one is hers.
2. Example Sentences
② Adjective Modifier
这是一本新书。
Zhè shì yì běn xīn de shū.
this is 一本one measure word 新的new book
This is a new book.
② Adjective Modifier
她穿了一件漂亮衣服。

💡 Multi-syllable adjectives usually need the particle before the noun.
① Possession
这本书是我
Zhè běn shū shì wǒ de.
这本this + measure word book is 我的mine
This book is mine.
💡 Full form: the noun is dropped because it already appeared earlier in the sentence.
① Possession

Zhè shì shéi de?
this is 谁的whose
Whose is this?
💡 The noun is omitted entirely — both speakers can see the object being referred to.
① Possession
那双鞋是他,不是我
Nà shuāng xié shì tā de, bú shì wǒ de.
那双that pair shoes is 他的his 不是is not 我的mine
Those shoes are his, not mine.

Zhè shì Zhōngwén de shū háishi Yīngwén de?

② Adj/Noun → de-phrase (noun omitted)
我要大,不要小
Wǒ yào dà de, bú yào xiǎo de.
I want 大的the big one 不要do not want 小的the small one
I want the big one, not the small one.
💡 The noun is omitted because both speakers already know what is being chosen from. Each modifier phrase acts as a noun phrase.
② Adj/Noun → de-phrase (noun omitted)
好看,白也不错。
Hóng de hǎokàn, bái de yě bú cuò.
红的the red one 好看looks nice 白的the white one also 不错pretty good
The red one looks nice; the white one is pretty good too.
① + ② Both de-phrase
这件是新,那件是她
Zhè jiàn shì xīn de, nà jiàn shì tā de.
这件this one is 新的new one 那件that one is 她的hers
This one is a new one; that one is hers.
💡 The first phrase is an adjective de-phrase; the second shows possession. Both drop the clothing noun because it is clear from context.
① + ② de-phrase in a question
你要哪个?贵还是便宜
Nǐ yào nǎge? Guì de háishi piányí de?
you want 哪个which one 贵的the expensive one 还是or 便宜的the cheap one

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid:

❌ Wrong: 这本书是我的书。(Zhè běn shū shì wǒ de shū.) — Repeating the noun after the particle is unnatural when it was just mentioned

✅ Correct: 这本书是我的。(Zhè běn shū shì wǒ de.) — Drop the noun after the particle — it's already clear

❌ Wrong: 她穿了一件漂亮衣服。(Tā chuān le yí jiàn piàoliang yīfu.) — Multi-syllable adjectives require the particle before the noun

✅ Correct: 她穿了一件漂亮衣服。(Tā chuān le yí jiàn piàoliang de yīfu.) — Multi-syllable adjective + particle + noun

❌ Wrong: 我要大的苹果,不要小的苹果。— Repeating the noun twice after the particle is unnecessary and sounds unnatural

✅ Correct: 我要大的,不要小的。(Wǒ yào dà de, bú yào xiǎo de.) — Once the noun is understood, use a de-phrase
