🎯 Goal: Don’t Panic! Think of Chinese sentences like Lego bricks.
Grammar gives you the “Big Picture”. You don’t need to memorize technical terms now. Just understand the logic: Chinese is simpler than you think!
1. The “Good News”: Grammar Subtraction
A. No Verb Conjugation
We don’t change the verb form based on who is doing it or when.
❌ English (Complex Changes)
I go. / She goes. / They went yesterday.
✅ Chinese (No Changes)
Wǒ我I
qù去go
Tā她She
qù去go
tāmen他们They
zuótiān昨天yesterday
qù去go
le了(Part.)
Note: “Le” (了) is a particle indicating completion/change.
B. No gender distinction and case inflection
1. No Gender Distinction: Unlike French or Spanish, Chinese nouns don’t have “Masculine” or “Feminine” assignments.
Table is always 桌子 (Zhuōzi) ,
Moon is always 月亮 (Yuèliang) .
2. No Case Inflection: Chinese nouns and pronouns do not change form based on their role (Subject/Object).
Wǒ我I
ài爱love
tā他him
Tā他He
ài爱love
wǒ我me
“Me” is still Wǒ. “He” is still Tā. No change!
C. No Plural Inflection
No “-s” or “-es”. Context and numbers tell the story.
一个 苹果yí gè píngguǒOne apple
三个 苹果sān gè píngguǒThree apples
D. Logic: Word Order + Function Words
Chinese relies on Word Order and Function Words to express meaning.
1. In Chinese, the position of a word in a sentence directly determines its grammatical role and the basic meaning of the sentence.
mànman慢慢slowly
de地(ly)
shuō说speak
“Slow” before verb = Do it slowly (Instruction).
shuō说speak
de得(deg)
hěn màn很慢very slow
“Slow” after verb = The result was slow.
2. Function words have no concrete lexical meaning themselves, but they have powerful grammatical functions, acting like ‘switches’ to precisely express tense, mood, relationships, etc. See Section 3.
2. The Golden Structure (S.V.O.)
A. Basic Order
The skeleton is: Subject + Verb + Object. Just like English.
Wǒ我I
xǐhuan喜欢like
nǐ你you
B. The Golden Rule of Modifiers
Rule 1: Natural Order. Chinese speakers describe events in the order they occur or the way we experience them spatially.
Wǒ我I
jīntiān今天today
zài jiā在家at home
xué学study
Zhōngwén中文Chinese
You need to arrive at this Time and be in this Place first, before the Action occurs.
Wǒ我I
hé péngyou和朋友w/ friend
qù去go
chīfàn吃饭eat
You need to be with friends first, before the action of going to eat can happen.
🚀 The “Long Sentence” Challenge
Even complex sentences follow the exact same rules! Just stack the blocks.
Wǒ我I
míngtiān明天tmrw
hé péngyou和朋友w/ friend
zài kāfēiguǎn在咖啡馆at café
xué学study
Zhōngwén中文Chinese
Rule 2: Description Before Noun. All modifiers come before the word they describe.
hóngsè de红色的red
píngguǒ苹果apple
Zhè这This
shì是is
mài qìchē de卖汽车的[sells cars]
gōngsī公司company
Even long descriptions (“that sells cars”) must go before the Noun (“Company”).
C. Topic-Comment Structure
A unique habit: We move the “Object” to the front to make it the Topic.
Zhè běn shū这本书This book
→
wǒ我I
kàn看read
le了(done)
Meaning: “As for this book, I have read it.”
3. The Lego Bricks (Components)
1. Function Words (The Glue)
Content Words: Words with real meaning (Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives). e.g., Apple, Run, Big.
Function Words: Words that have no meaning on their own but connect the bricks. Three key examples:
De:
wǒ我I
de的‘s
shū书Book
= My Book
Le:
qù去Go
le了(Done)
= Went
Ma:
qù去Go
ma吗(Question?)
= Go?
2. Measure Words (The Containers)
Nouns usually need a “unit” word when counting.
sān三Three
ge个(unit)
rén人People
yì一One
běn本(vol.)
shū书Book
4. Minimalist Questions & Answers
Statement = Question. No moving words around!
Type A: Yes/No (Add “Ma”)
Nǐ你You
shì是Are
lǎoshī老师Teacher
+
吗
Type B: Wh- Questions (Swap the word)
Don’t move the word order! Just replace the answer with the question word.
Statement:
Tā他He
chī吃Eat
píngguǒ苹果Apple
⬇️ Replace “Apple” with “What” ⬇️
Question:
Tā他He
chī吃Eat
shénme什么What
?
5. Knowledge Check
1. Do Chinese nouns have gender (Masculine/Feminine)?
2. What is the basic sentence order?
3. Where do you put “Time” (e.g., yesterday)?
4. Does the pronoun “I” change to “Me” in Chinese?
5. What indicates an action is completed?
6. Where do adjectives (descriptions) go?
Unit Summary
🔑 Key Takeaways
Grammar is Easy: No conjugations, no genders, no plurals.
The Golden Rule: S + V + O (like English).
Natural Order: Time and Place set the background before the action.
Lego Logic: We use “Measure Words” and “Particles” to connect words. Changing the order changes the meaning.
Topic First: We often put the “Topic” (Object) at the front (This book, I read it).
Questions: Don’t move words! Just add “ma” or swap the word for “what/where”.
Next Step: In the following units, we will learn these “Lego bricks” (Words) one by one!
