Chinese Interjections and Reaction Words

Words like 啊?, 哦, 哇, 哎呀, 唉 and 嗯 help you react naturally in Chinese conversations. They are short, emotional, and extremely common in real speech.

1 What Are Interjections and Reaction Words?

Interjections and reaction words are short words or phrases used to show instant feelings, reactions, hesitation, agreement, surprise, or attention. They often appear alone or at the beginning of a sentence.

不是吧? Bú shì ba? — No way, really?

Agreement / acceptance

Note: Some casual reactions such as 呵呵(hēhē), 切(qie), and 啧啧(zeze) can sound sarcastic, dismissive, or judgmental. They are useful to understand, but students should be careful using them.

6 Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Wrong: Use to casually call anyone in person.
Wèi! Nǐ guòlái!
Hey! Come here!
Why wrong: 喂 is normal on the phone, but in person it can sound rude or impatient.
✅ Correct: 诶,你过来一下。
Ēi, nǐ guòlái yíxià.
Hey, come here for a second.
❌ Wrong: Use 呵呵 like normal friendly laughter.
Hēhē.
Hehe.
Why wrong: In many online contexts, 呵呵 can sound cold, sarcastic, or awkward.
