Phone Number Reading 电话号码读法

In Chinese, the number 1 is often read as "yāo" (幺) instead of "yī" (一) in phone numbers to avoid confusion.

  • 1 → 幺 (yāo) instead of 一 (yī)
  • Example 例子: 138-1234-5678 → yāo-sān-bā-yāo-èr-sān-sì-wǔ-liù-qī-bā

Part 3: Key Sentence Patterns 核心句型

★ 请问是 + [人] + 吗? (Qǐngwèn shì + [person] + ma?)
Usage: Politely asking to confirm identity on phone (电话中礼貌确认身份)
Example: 请问是李先生吗? (Qǐngwèn shì Lǐ xiānsheng ma?)
Is this Mr. Li?
(Lit: please-ask is Li sir?)
★ 请问 + [人] + 在吗? (Qǐngwèn + [person] + zài ma?)
Usage: Asking if someone is available (询问某人是否在)
Example: 请问王经理在吗? (Qǐngwèn Wáng jīnglǐ zài ma?)
Is Manager Wang there?
(Lit: please-ask Wang manager at?)
★ [动作] + 得见/不见 ([Action] + de jiàn / bù jiàn)
Usage: Asking if someone can perceive something (询问对方能否感知到)
Example: 你听得见吗?/ 看得见吗? (Nǐ tīng de jiàn ma? / Kàn de jiàn ma?)
Can you hear? / Can you see?
(Lit: you hear able-see? / see able-see?)
★ 请再 + [动作] + 一遍 (Qǐng zài + [action] + yí biàn)
Usage: Asking someone to repeat an action (请求对方重复某个动作)
Example: 请再说一遍。/ 请再念一遍。 (Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn. / Qǐng zài niàn yí biàn.)
Please say/read it again.
(Lit: please again say/read one time)
★ [信息] + 对吗?/ 对吧? ([Info] + duì ma? / duì ba?)
Usage: Confirming information is correct (确认信息是否正确)
Example: 138-1234-5678,对吗? (Yāo-sān-bā..., duì ma?)
138-1234-5678, right?
(Lit: 138..., correct?)
★ 请问您的 + [信息] + 是...? (Qǐngwèn nín de + [info] + shì...?)
Usage: Politely asking for someone's information (礼貌询问某人的信息)
Example: 请问您的地址是哪里? (Qǐngwèn nín de dìzhǐ shì nǎlǐ?)
May I ask what your address is?
(Lit: please-ask your address is where?)

Part 4: Cultural Tips 文化小贴士

  • "喂" (wèi) - The universal phone greeting (电话专用问候语) Unlike "你好" used in person, "喂" (wèi) is THE standard way to answer the phone in Chinese. Its pronunciation often uses a rising tone (wéi?) for a neutral or questioning greeting. When pronounced with a falling tone (wèi!), it can sound impatient, similar to "Hey!" in English. It can be used in most contexts. Example: 喂?你好!(Wéi? Nǐ hǎo! Hello? Hi! Lit: hey? you good!)
    与面对面用"你好"不同,"喂"是中文接电话的标准方式。它的发音一般是上扬的二声(wéi?),发四声(wèi!)的时候,听起来可能有些不耐烦,像英语的"Hey!"。它是中性的,可以在大部分场合使用。
  • "幺" (yāo) for number 1 (数字1的读法) When reading phone numbers, Chinese speakers use "幺" (yāo) instead of "一" (yī) for the digit 1. This prevents confusion with "七" (qī, 7) which sounds similar to "一". Example: 110 → yāo-yāo-líng (emergency number), not yī-yī-líng.
    读电话号码时,中国人用"幺"而不是"一"来读数字1。这样可以避免与发音相似的"七"混淆。例如:110读作"幺幺零"。
  • "小" + surname as a nickname ("小"+姓作为昵称) In Chinese, adding "小" (xiǎo, little/young) before a surname creates a friendly, informal nickname. For example, 小王 (Xiǎo Wáng, Little Wang) or 小李 (Xiǎo Lǐ, Little Li). This is commonly used among friends, colleagues, or when addressing younger people. Example: 小王,你好!(Xiǎo Wáng, nǐ hǎo! Hi, Xiao Wang! Lit: little Wang, you good!)
    在中文里,在姓氏前加"小"可以构成一个友好、非正式的昵称。例如:小王、小李。这在朋友、同事之间或称呼年轻人时很常用。
  • Chinese address format (中国地址格式) Chinese addresses go from large to small: Country → Province/City → District → Street → Building Number. Example: 中国北京市朝阳区建国路88号 (China, Beijing City, Chaoyang District, Jianguo Road, No. 88). This is opposite to Western address format.
    中文地址从大到小排列:国家→省/市→区→街道→门牌号。这与西方地址格式相反。
  • WeChat over phone calls (微信比电话更常用) In modern China, WeChat (微信, Wēixìn) has largely replaced phone calls for daily communication. Asking "加个微信吧?" (Jiā ge Wēixìn ba? Want to add each other on WeChat? Lit: add a WeChat?) is now more common than asking for phone numbers among younger people.
    在现代中国,微信已经基本取代电话成为日常通讯方式。在年轻人中,问"加个微信吧"比问电话号码更常见。

Part 5: Casual Alternatives 口语替代表达

In everyday phone conversations, Chinese people often use more casual expressions: 在日常电话交谈中,中国人经常使用更随意的表达方式:

Standard 标准 Casual 口语 Context 使用场景
你是哪位? Nǐ shì nǎ wèi? Who is this? (Lit: you are which person?) 谁啊?/ 哪位啊? Shéi a? / Nǎ wèi a? Who's this? (Lit: who? / which person?) Between friends, very casual
朋友之间,非常随意
请再说一遍 Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn Please say that again (Lit: please again say one time) 啥?再说一遍! Shá? Zài shuō yí biàn! What? Say it again! (Lit: what? again say one time!) Casual, informal situations
随意、非正式场合
我没听清楚 Wǒ méi tīng qīngchu I didn't hear clearly (Lit: I not hear clear) 没听清!/ 听不清! Méi tīng qīng! / Tīng bù qīng! Didn't catch that! (Lit: not hear clear!) Quick response in noisy situations
嘈杂环境中的快速回应
有事再联系 Yǒu shì zài liánxì Let's keep in touch (Lit: have matter again contact) 回头聊!/ 改天再说! Huítóu liáo! / Gǎitiān zài shuō! Talk later! / Another day! (Lit: turn-head chat! / change-day again say!) Casual farewell among friends
朋友间的随意告别
再见 Zàijiàn Goodbye (Lit: again see) 挂了啊!/ 拜拜! Guà le a! / Bàibài! Hanging up! / Bye! (Lit: hang! / bye-bye!) Very casual ending
非常随意的结束
💡 Tip 小提示:"喂" can sound different based on tone - rising tone (wéi?) when answering sounds questioning/neutral, while falling tone (wèi!) can sound impatient. Keep it gentle!
"喂"的语气不同,意思也不同——上升的语调(wéi?)听起来是疑问/中性的,而下降的语调(wèi!)可能听起来不耐烦。要温和!
