HSK1 Grammar: "有" (yǒu) Indicating Existence
有 (yǒu) means "there is / there are" when used with a place word. It tells us what exists somewhere. The negation is 没有 (méiyǒu) — NOT 不有. The place comes first, then 有/没有, then the noun.
Key points:
- Word order: Place + 有/没有 + Noun — the place always comes first
- Positive 有 can take a number + measure word: 桌子上有一本书。
- Negative 没有 is used directly before the noun — no number needed: 桌子上没有书。
- Never use 不有 — the only negation of 有 is 没有. (‘没’ emphasizes non-existence or non-occurrence, while ‘不’ emphasizes not wanting, not accepting, or not doing.)
- To ask a yes/no question, add 吗 at the end: 教室里有学生吗?(Jiàoshì lǐ yǒu xuésheng ma?-Are there students in the classroom?) or use 有没有: 教室里有没有学生?(Jiàoshì lǐ yǒu méiyǒu xuésheng?-Is there or isn't there any student in the classroom?)

Usage Scenarios:
- What's in a room: 教室里 + 有 + 学生 → 教室里有学生。 (Jiàoshì lǐ yǒu xuésheng.) — There are students in the classroom.
- What's on a surface: 桌子上 + 有 + 一杯茶 → 桌子上有一杯茶。 (Zhuōzi shàng yǒu yī bēi chá.) — There is a cup of tea on the table.
- Nothing exists (negative): 家里 + 没有 + 人 → 家里没有人。 (Jiā lǐ méiyǒu rén.) — There is nobody at home.
- Yes/No question: 冰箱里 + 有 + 水果 + 吗 → 冰箱里有水果吗? (Bīngxiāng lǐ yǒu shuǐguǒ ma?) — Is there fruit in the fridge?
- Identifying a place (是 sentence): 学校旁边 + 是 + 商店 → 学校旁边是商店。 (Xuéxiào pángbiān shì shāngdiàn.) — Next to the school is a shop.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid:
❌ Wrong: 家里不有人。(Jiā lǐ bù yǒu rén.) — Using 不 to negate 有
✅ Correct: 家里没有人。(Jiā lǐ méiyǒu rén.) — Always use 没有, never 不有
❌ Wrong: 桌子上没有一本书。(Zhuōzi shàng méiyǒu yī běn shū.) — Adding a number after 没有
✅ Correct: 桌子上没有书。(Zhuōzi shàng méiyǒu shū.) — No number after 没有 — just Place + 没有 + Noun
❌ Wrong: 有人家里。(Yǒu rén jiā lǐ.) — Place comes after 有 (wrong order)
✅ Correct: 家里有人。(Jiā lǐ yǒu rén.) — Place always comes FIRST: Place + 有 + Noun
💡 Don't confuse these three:
• 有 sentence: 桌子上有书。(Zhuōzi shàng yǒu shū.) — There is a book on the table. (What exists?)
• 在 sentence: 书在桌子上。(Shū zài zhuōzi shàng.) — The book is on the table. (Where is the specific book?)
• 是 sentence: 旁边是学校。(Pángbiān shì xuéxiào.) — Next to it is the school. (What is that place?)
